Reptile Habitat

With the increasing popularity of reptiles as pets, comes the increasing responsibility to get the reptile habitat right. Reptiles have now moved into the mainstream and no longer have secondary status as pets. Finding the right environment, and knowing how to properly care for these amazing creatures is essential.

So the first thing about starting a reptile terrarium is deciding on the right pet. There are all sorts of types you could consider. Choices in lizards are varied, including Geckos, Chameleons, Anoles, and Iguanas. Or maybe a small snake? Frogs can be housed in a really nice amphibian habitat for a slightly different variation.

Some pets can actually live together in the same environment and get along quite well. If you did your research, you could possibly make a very interesting and varied terrarium.

You will need to consider how large your pets are going to grow to. Obviously most reptile pets stay quite small but you need to be very aware that some start small and can grow to be very large, some snakes need to be looked after in quite a large enclosure or at least one that you can increase the size of. Bear in mind whether your pet will want to climb or maybe need a large ‘footprint’ of space to roam around in.

There are varied types of terrarium to consider when thinking about your reptile habitat. For example you may need a desert type terrarium. These contain half pieces of tree bark, some desert type plants and various cacti. There is the forest terrain as well; mainly this is for reptiles and also amphibians. Within this terrarium you will find rocks and small tree branches and other plants all to help your pet climb on. You should consider objects for your pet to hide under, and also don’t forget a water source.

You will need to make sure you have a heat lamp and reptile light, which will give a basking area. Perhaps a nice large flat rock would be ideal?
